Education: High School Diploma or GED; Some college hours preferred. All teacher assistants newly hired and working or at a site supported with Title funds must hold an associate degree or have 2 years of post secondary education, or be a high school graduate and pass a PARAPRO assessment test.

 

Training or experience required: Previous work or volunteer experience with young children; clerical experience preferred.

Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills and to handle problems and provide information and technical assistance as requested. It requires complying with safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury to staff or to students. It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns for staff. Creativity, initiative and effective problem solving are critical to the success of the position. Perform such tasks to the ultimate benefit of the educational program. An incumbent in this position will utilize discretion, ingenuity and independent judgment due to the complexity of the job. This job requires frequent bending/stooping and occasional to frequent squatting/crouching, reaching above the shoulder, and pushing and pulling. There is occasional lifting up to 40 pounds to assist the lifting of chairs, classroom equipment and supplies. The incumbent must have the dexterity to operate keyboards, computers, copy machines, and other office/instructional machines. Must be able to supervise students in the classroom and outside. Must be able to communicate with student and parents. Must be able to get around the classroom, library, cafeteria, campus, etc. Must be able to assist students with normal activities.
